EV Sales In Europe Reach a Historic Milestone

In a pivotal moment for the European automotive market, more electric vehicles were sold in the European Union in December 2025 than petrol-only cars. This marks the first time in history that EV registrations have overtaken gasoline vehicles in a single month. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), roughly 308,955 fully electric new vehicles were registered across the EU, UK and EFTA nations in December. This strongly exceeded petrol cars’ 254,449 units and confirmed the growing consumer demand for electrification.

The surge reflects a strong year-on-year increase of around 50 % in EV registrations, while petrol car sales declined by nearly 18 %. These numbers highlight a structural shift in buying patterns. EVs also increased their share of the European new-car market in 2025 overall, growing alongside plug-in hybrids and helping push total electrified powertrains to represent more than half of new vehicle registrations.
Industry experts view this milestone as a major turning point toward greener mobility, driven by expanding charging infrastructure, falling battery costs and stronger policy support across the EU.
