Hybrid and Electric Cars Gaining Ground in EU New Car Registrations

automotive industry

Hybrid and battery-electric vehicles are strengthening their position in the European Union’s new car market. According to recent industry data, they now account for an increasingly large share of registrations. Electrified powertrains continue to benefit from stricter emissions targets, expanding model availability, and growing consumer acceptance across key European markets.

Now, battery-electric vehicles and hybrids combined represent more than half of all new passenger car registrations in the EU. This highlights a structural shift away from traditional combustion engines. What is more, registrations of petrol and diesel vehicles continue to decline year-on-year, reflecting both regulatory pressure and changing buyer preferences.

The trend underscores the accelerating transition of the European automotive sector toward lower-emission mobility. Industry analysts note that further growth in electrified vehicles is expected during the first months of 2026, supported by improving charging infrastructure, falling battery costs, and ongoing investments by manufacturers in electric and hybrid platforms.
