EU Pushes Automotive Sector Toward Full Circularity

Automotive circularity

The European Parliament has approved landmark rules aimed at making vehicles more sustainable throughout their entire lifecycle. The new regulation requires all new cars and vans sold in the EU to be designed for easier disassembly, repair, reuse and recycling. This marks a major shift toward a circular automotive economy.

On top of that, the legislation also introduces binding targets for recycled content. Within the next six years, plastics used in new vehicles must contain at least 20% recycled material, with a potential increase to 25% within a decade if supply allows. Manufacturers will additionally take more responsibility for collecting and treating end-of-life vehicles, helping reduce waste and prevent illegal exports of derelict cars.

Overall, the initiative is expected to lower resource consumption, reduce environmental impact and stimulate Europe’s recycling and remanufacturing industries, signaling a significant step toward a cleaner and more efficient mobility future.
