Volvo is Bringing Google Gemini’s AI Inside the Car

AI-based cars

Volvo Cars is set to become one of the first car manufacturers to integrate Google’s Gemini conversational AI into its vehicles. This signals a major leap forward in in-car user experience. The system will first be used in models such as the fully electric Volvo EX90, running on Android Automotive OS. The innovative system will provide drivers with natural, hands-free interaction that goes beyond traditional and simple voice commands.

Unlike most common voice assistants that can only deal with the most basic tasks, Gemini can process complex queries, provide detailed guidance, and even answer questions like “How do I change a tire?” The AI-based assistant is crafted to make driving safer by reducing outside distractions and minimizing the driver’s need to look at screens or smartphones.

The collaboration is the next big step in Volvo’s long-standing partnership with Google. The partnership started in 2017 when Volvo first adopted Android Automotive OS. With Gemini, the company aims to set a new standard for AI-powered infotainment. The objective is to combine seamless navigation, proactive recommendations, and vehicle-specific knowledge.

Industry analysts see this move as a milestone in the broader trend toward software-defined vehicles. By deploying Gemini before most competitors on the market, Volvo positions itself as a pioneer in bringing advanced conversational AI directly into the car, shaping how drivers interact with their vehicles for the foreseeable future.
