The European Commission has announced an extensive plan to protect the competitiveness of Europe’s automotive sector and accelerate its green transition. The focal point of the initiative is a €1.8 billion “Battery Booster” package from the Innovation Fund. The package is supposed to bolster battery manufacturing and secure a reliable EU supply chain for raw materials.
The bold plan is based on five pillars—innovation and digitalization, clean mobility, supply‐chain resilience, workforce skills, and a fair business environment. The goal of the pillars is to reinforce both technological leadership and social cohesion.
Among the key measures of the action plan are proposals to allow CO₂ emission targets for cars and vans to be met over a three-year averaging period (2025–2027). This gives manufacturers more flexibility and helps mitigate the risk of penalties.
The Commission also committed to fast-tracking autonomous vehicle testbeds, launching a Connected & Autonomous Vehicle Alliance. They’re also aiming to strengthen EV charging infrastructure via a Clean Transport Corridor Initiative.
The objective of this comprehensive strategy is to help the EU reduce its dependency on imports, foster local innovation, and ensure a just, resilient transition toward zero-emission, connected mobility.
